Still the Best Defence: Handwashing and the Flu Season in Adelaide

As the weather cools and the flu season kicks off here in Adelaide, it’s a good time to revisit one of the most powerful lessons we learnt during the pandemic: handwashing works.

It might seem simple, but frequent handwashing with soap remains one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of viruses — including colds, flu, and COVID-19. It’s not just about keeping yourself safe, but protecting those around you, especially the vulnerable.

And yet, when life gets busy, it’s easy to let the habit slip.

So how do we make regular hand washing part of our everyday rhythm again?

The key is ease and access. If soap and water are always close at hand, we’re more likely to use them. That’s why we recommend setting up your home with liquid soap at the three most-used spots:

  • The bathroom, where hygiene starts and ends each day

  • The kitchen sink, where hands meet food (and food scraps, and pets, and grubby shopping bags)

  • The laundry, the often-overlooked hygiene hub, especially if you're cleaning up after illness, kids, or pets

Outside the house, it's just as important to stay mindful. Anytime you’ve been out and about — think cafés, public transport, and rideshares, (the polling booth!) — your hands have come into contact with dozens of shared surfaces. Washing your hands when you get home is a small action that has a big ripple effect.

LycanCo’s range of naturally scented soaps make it easy to keep your handwashing stations topped up  - LycanCo’s Liquid Soap range is often the most convenient choice for busy families. Our soaps are made with gentle, plant-based ingredients that clean effectively without stripping your skin — so you’re not left choosing between hygiene and comfort.

This winter, let’s keep the good habits going.

Keep soap where you need it.

Wash often.

Stay well.
